Super Amigos

Part of the 24th Annual Olympia Film Festival

Directed by: Arturo Perez Torres
2007 / Mexico / 82 minutes / DVCam - Color - in Spanish with English subtitles

Starring: Ecologista Universal, Fray Tormenta, Super Animal, Super Barrio, Super Gay

In a city of 23 million people, poverty and injustice are widespread, but five masked heroes fight back. They are Fray Tormenta, Super Barrio, Super Gay, Ecologista Universal, and Super Animal, and they fight against poverty, homophobia, pollution and animal cruelty amongst other things. This may sound like a superhero comic book, but the story takes place not in Metropolis, but in Mexico City, and the protagonists have no super powers but their own inner strength and resourcefulness. These heroes wear the capes and masks of the Mexican luchadores (the masked wrestlers parodied in Nacho Libre) which serve to add to their hero mystique and to protect their identities—never revealed throughout this film.

Plays with: The Fighting Cholitas
